Encampments have come up as a hot topic in recent years considering they are one of the most glaring and visible symptoms of the current housing crisis. Although many turn to encampments they are not safe shelter options, and it is our responsibility as a city to ensure that there is trust within our shelter system, supportive housing programs, and external housing providers. Encampments, although driven by the need for survival and agency, do not provide the long-term solutions and support that individuals experiencing homelessness truly require.
Streets to Homes and other outreach and service providers are present in Ward 13 daily, attempting to match individuals with indoor accommodations and housing.
Encampment Evictions
Encampments are illegal, however, the process of removing them is not simple and there are many other factors to consider. A recent Waterloo court ruling established that evictions without the provision of suitable shelter are unlawful. This decision underscores the importance of finding compassionate and practical solutions when addressing homelessness; ensuring individuals are not displaced without appropriate alternatives or support.
Furthermore, the City of Toronto's Ombudsman's 2021 report on encampment clearings sheds light on the complexities involved and underscores the need for a more comprehensive and humane approach that prioritizes the well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness.
We are dedicated to addressing this issue with empathy and understanding by actively collaborate with city departments, community organizations, and stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions focusing on immediate shelter needs and pathways to stable housing with comprehensive support services.
