2024 Projects

There are a number of exciting capital projects moving ahead in Toronto Centre this year! Read all about what is coming up in your neighbourhood and across the ward.

Wellesley Station Mural: June 2024

Wellesley Station sees over a million visitors for the annual Pride celebration, yet the station bears little reference to the community it serves. Through our 2023 Participatory Budgeting exercise, residents voted to paint a rainbow mural above Wellesley Station.

The planned mural above Wellesley Station will feature a 2SLGBTQ+ welcoming theme that will represent the diversity of the Church-Wellesley Village. The project is currently in the scoping and planning phase in partnership with the Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Pride Toronto to create a local jury for recruitment and curation. From design until unveiling, this mural is scheduled to be completed a week before the Toronto Pride Festival 2024 in June.

Underpass Park West OLA: Q2 2024

The City is adding an off-leash area (OLA) in the Corktown Common neighbourhood. The new OLA will be placed in the western portion of Underpass Park which is bounded by St. Lawrence Street, Eastern Avenue and the Eastern Avenue Diversion.

Due to ongoing capital repairs to the Eastern/Adelaide bridges, construction will be done in two phases. Phase 1 of the OLA work will begin Q2 of 2024 and focuses on the area south of the overpass. Phase 2 of construction will continue in Q3 of 2025 following the rehabilitation of the overhead bridge structure.

Sumach Shuter Parkette and Orphan Green OLA: September 2024

The improvements for the Sumach-Shuter Parkette and Orphan Green off-leash area (OLA) are coming! The City is undertaking a redesign of the parkette to better serve the local community. Enhancements include new recreational and leisure furniture for residents, a new playground and new lighting and walkways for better accessibility.

Additionally, the project will enhance lighting and surfacing at the nearby Orphan's Green OLA. Aside from a new mulch surface, the new lighting will improve safety and access to the OLA during the late evening.

The construction timeline for the park and the OLA is scheduled to begin in April 2024 and be complete by September 2024.

Anniversary Park Reconstruction and Renaming: December 2024

Anniversary Park in Cabbagetown is getting a brand new design!

The new concept by Thinc Design will transform Anniversary Park into a charming urban parkette centered around an iconic ornamental water fountain. Surrounding a garden area, long wooden benches provide a comfortable space for residents to appreciate native trees and pollinator plants. The park will feature additional lighting, a water bottle filling station and cafe tables and chairs. Furthermore, the Gerrard Street East slip lane will be raised and pedestrianized to optimize community programming opportunities.

The improvements to Anniversary Park will align with the Gerrard East Complete Street project and Cabbagetown Cycling Connections project. Construction of Anniversary Park improvements is scheduled to begin Spring 2024 and commencing until Winter 2024. Updates can be found on Toronto Centre Projects.

February 2025 Welcome Letter

With the colder weather, I hope you and your family have been able to find joy with activities like sledding and skating that are only possible this time of year. There are many opportunities across the city for drop-in ice skating, such as in Regent Park and in Nathan Phillips Square. There are always plenty of people learning for the first time, so If you’ve never skated before, you’ll be in good company! So I encourage you to get out and hit the ice this February while the weather cooperates.
