260 Wellesley Street East Fire - November 3

Toronto Fire Servics (TFS) responded to a report of fire at 260 Wellesley Street just after 8:00am. As of 10:00 AM, the fire has been extinguished. The origin and cause of the fire is currently unknown. Should there be any signficiant distruptions to the building, including but not limited to temporary displacement or power outages, my office will begin providing regular updates via my website and our text messaging service.

Toronto Fire Services (TFS) has provided my office with some information about the fire at 260 Wellesley Street.

Following the response, four people were rescued by TFS via aerial ladders. Unfortunately, 3 people have been sent to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. I wish them all a speedy recovery, and hope any damage from smoke or fire to individual units is minimal.

The tenant of the unit where the fire commenced has been provided alternative accomodations. We remain waiting on updates for any other impacted tenants.

Toronto Fire Services will remain on the scene throughout the day to continue ventilation of the building, and TFS, Toronto Police Services, and the Office of Emergency Management have commenced an investigation into the origin, cause, and circumstances of the fire. Please check back for any further updates.

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
