Church-Yonge is the second-largest neighbourhood by population in the Core. It is home to the most couples without children and single-person households in the Core due perhaps to Ryerson University, the Village and the high-rise built form of the area. The majority of residents are renters and nearly half are spending more than 30% of their income on shelter. Though below the city average, there are more people who are unemployed here than in any other neighbourhood in the Core. Church Wellesley Village includes an organization called the Church Wellesley Neighbourhood Association as well as a Business Improvement Area named the Church Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area.

You might not know it from the recent rollercoaster of weather, but spring has arrived in Toronto. Hot on its heels, our first Environment Day is happening at Allan Gardens on May 10, the Underpass Park Farmers' Market is opening May 14, and patio season begins right around the Victoria Day weekend. Let’s get out, enjoy our open spaces, support local businesses,  and celebrate the warmer weather!

The pedestrianization of two blocks of Church Street this summer is a major initiative that I have been working on with the Church-Wellesley Business Improvement Area. From June 19 - August 21, Church Street will be pedestrianized between Wellesley Street East and Alexander Street. To date, over 2,200 people have signed a petition in support of this, and I invite you to add your support by  visiting the Toronto Centre Projects website.

As we head into April, I wish you and your families a wonderful Easter and Passover. For those with kids, I’ve invited the Easter Bunny to join me this Saturday for free events for your whole family!

Doug Ford’s campaign of cruelty against marginalized people living with addiction challenges continues to worsen – and he’s making our entire downtown increasingly unsafe in the process. Ford continues to ignore professionals, experts, researchers, and medical advice in the process as he tries to shut down two of the last remaining supervised consumption services (SCSs) in the Downtown East.
