Fireworks: Stay Safe and Prevent Accidents

An exciting part of Victoria Day and Canada Day festivities, fireworks also have potential to cause serious injury. In Toronto, you are only allowed to set off consumer fireworks without a permit on Victoria Day (May 18 this year) and Canada Day on your own private property until 11:00pm. On all other days, you need a permit. Before celebrating with fireworks, it’s important to know when and where they are allowed, how to use them safely and how to dispose of them correctly.

When and where can I set off fireworks?

In Toronto, setting off fireworks on your own property is allowed until 11:00pm most days with the appropriate permit. Victoria Day (May 18 this year) and Canada Day are the only days that permits are not required. Fireworks are not allowed in public parks, beaches, streets and parking lots, on balconies or on any private property that is not your own. To report the use of fireworks in a City park or beach or the illegal sale or misuse of fireworks, contact 311.

How do I safely dispose of fireworks?

To dispose of fireworks:

  • Completely submerge used or unused fireworks in water and soak them overnight.
  • Dispose of up to 10 fireworks at a time in your garbage bin.
  • For additional quantities, place them in your garbage bin over separate collection dates.
  • Never put used or unused fireworks in the Blue Bin (recycling) because this can cause fires in waste collection vehicles and at facilities.

A new mural is coming to Central Neighbourhood House, and we need your feedback! In response to community feedback, the site for the mural–a project from my 2024 Participatory Budgeting exercise–has been moved from 237 Gerrard Street East to Central Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario Street), which offers a larger canvas.

Please fill out this survey to provide feedback on the mural location and theme.

You might not know it from the recent rollercoaster of weather, but spring has arrived in Toronto. Hot on its heels, our first Environment Day is happening at Allan Gardens on May 10, the Underpass Park Farmers' Market is opening May 14, and patio season begins right around the Victoria Day weekend. Let’s get out, enjoy our open spaces, support local businesses,  and celebrate the warmer weather!

The pedestrianization of two blocks of Church Street this summer is a major initiative that I have been working on with the Church-Wellesley Business Improvement Area. From June 19 - August 21, Church Street will be pedestrianized between Wellesley Street East and Alexander Street. To date, over 2,200 people have signed a petition in support of this, and I invite you to add your support by  visiting the Toronto Centre Projects website.
