Gerrard East Complete Street Update

Following provincial legislation that stalled The Gerrard East Complete Street project, the City has identified a new approach to the streetscape and road design along Gerrard Street East (Sherbourne Street to River Street), which maintains motor vehicle lanes, in compliance with provincial direction. The revised design between Sherbourne Street and Parliament Street includes a uni-directional bikeway eastbound and westbound (on the north and south side) while future proofing for a bi-directional bikeway on the south side as originally envisioned.

The Gerrard East Complete Street Project will be broken up into 3 phases:

Phase 1: Sherbourne Street to Parliament Street

This phase of the project includes road, water main work and long-overdue Anniversary Park upgrades, along with underground work between Sherbourne Street and Parliament Street. This work will be delivered between Spring of 2027 and Spring of 2028.

Phase 2: Parliament Street to River Street

This phase of the project includes previously planned through lane removals and redevelopment upgrades that are currently infeasible due to the new Bill 60 and highway traffic act changes introduced by the province. Currently, no bikeways are planned for this strip, but it remains a priority in the transportation services division.

Phase 3: River Street to Blackburn Street

This final phase of the project includes bridge rehabilitation and an opportunity to bundle cycle track work connecting right of ways into current existing bike lanes as state of good repair works between Calgie Lane to Parliament Street. No changes yet approved at the moment. This work is estimated to be delivered between Spring 2030 to Fall 2031.

One event I am always happy to promote is the great work the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association's Waste Reduction Group (WRG) does with their regular REmarket events! Operating out of the St. Lawrence Market Tent at 125 The Esplanade, the WRG has done incredible work to reduce Toronto Centre's environmental impact. While they won't be returning until October 21 and 22 of 2026, I wanted to give them a special shoutout and opportunity to promote their own work.
