Louis March Park Renaming

On Sunday, July 20, our community came together to celebrate the official opening of Louis March Park--formerly Sumach-Shuter Parkette--a revitalized green space renamed in honour of the late Louis March. This renaming recognizes his lifelong commitment to community safety, youth advocacy and violence prevention, as well as the contributions of other leaders who have helped shape our neighbourhood.

It was a privilege to be joined by residents, community organizations, and dignitaries including Mayor Olivia Chow and MPP Chris Glover. Together, we reflected on the significance of this space through moving tributes, a moment of silence, a libation ceremony, and the official unveiling of the park sign. A ribbon cutting and symbolic dove release followed, representing peace and unity. The afternoon also featured cultural performances, including poetry, steel pan, and drumming, and concluded with a community gathering filled with food, music, and connection.

Louis March Park is more than a physical space. It is a tribute to those who have led with compassion and courage, and a reminder of what we can accomplish together when we invest in community. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event. I encourage all residents to visit the park and help keep his legacy alive.

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
