Make the Right Call

On January 26, the City of Toronto relaunched the “Make the Right Call” campaign. In addition to informing residents of when to call 9-1-1, 3-1-1 or 2-1-1, the campaign includes a new way to connect with the police non-emergency line by dialing *-8-7-7 from a mobile phone. Those calling from a landline can continue to use 416-808-2222.

Why is it important to make the right call?

Making the right call to the right number can save valuable time when time is of the essence and also gets the caller to the right service in the most efficient way.

What should I do if I call 9-1-1 by mistake?

If you call by mistake, disconnect immediately. You will automatically receive a text message prompting you to text back 1 if you have an emergency, or text back 9 if you do not. If you text back 1, a 9-1-1 call-taker will call you back. There is no need to dial 9-1-1 again as your call is already in the queue.

What is 2-1-1?

Calling 2-1-1 will connect you to the complete range of government and community-based health and social services available in your community including Toronto Community Crisis Service (TCCS). If you or someone you know needs mental health support or a wellness check, call 2-1-1.

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
