Introducing: Melanin Market at Sankofa Square

I am so excited to share that Melanin Market is launching in Sankofa Square on Wednesday, June 25 from 2:00pm to 9:00pm; a new public market celebrating Black, Indigenous and racialized creativity, entrepreneurship and community.

This market is part of the broader renaming and reimagining of the space now known as Sankofa Square, a name rooted in Black cultural memory and ancestral wisdom. It's only fitting that this new chapter begins with a market that centres the voices, visions, and talents of BIPOC communities. Check out Sankofa Square’s media release on the event here.

The first Melanin Market will feature all BIPOC and Woman owned vendors offering food, art, fashion, wellness, and more. The first market will also include free yoga classes and wellness activations by The Villij, helping us create a space that nourishes both body and spirit.

Melanin Market will be hosted in Sankofa Square for the following dates:

  • Friday, July 18, 2:00pm to 9:00pm
  • Wednesday July 30, 2:00pm to 9:00pm
  • Friday August 15, 2:00pm to 9:00pm
  • Friday August 29, 2:00pm to 9:00pm

Come support local businesses, reconnect with community, and help us build something beautiful together.

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
