New Carbon Monoxide Alarm Requirements

Effective January 1, 2026, all residences with a fuel-burning appliance (such as a gas stove), fireplace or attached garage require a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm on every storey, in addition to the existing requirement of having alarms near all sleeping areas. The new rules also apply to multi-unit residential buildings such as multi-tenant houses, apartments and condominiums, as well as care facilities and certain group homes. These residences now need CO alarms in more locations, such as in all suites and some public corridors.

I’m a renter. Do I need to install carbon monoxide alarms in my home? 

In rental properties, landlords are responsible for complying with the Ontario Fire Code, including carbon monoxide alarm requirements. If your landlord does not provide working carbon monoxide alarms, contact 311 for a referral to Toronto Fire Services. 

What kind of carbon monoxide alarms are permitted? 

Carbon monoxide alarms should meet Canadian performance standards and have the logo of a recognized standards testing agency on them. CO alarms can be hardwired, battery operated or plug-in. Alarms that are both for smoke and CO are also acceptable. More information is available on the City’s website at toronto.ca/FireSafety.
