New Traffic Agents Hired!

On February 13, the City of Toronto welcomed 58 new Traffic Agents to help ease congestion and keep Toronto moving safely. The City now has more than 100 active Traffic Agents who are deployed to some of Toronto’s most congested intersections during peak periods to effectively manage the safe movement of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Traffic Agents are appointed as Special Constables by the Toronto Police Services Board, empowering them to actively manage traffic under the Highway Traffic Act. Traffic Agents do not have enforcement powers, but they can issue parking tickets when necessary.

Traffic Agents play a key role managing congestion by:

  • Preventing drivers from blocking intersections (blocking the box)
  • Encouraging pedestrians to follow crossing signals
  • Ensuring people cycling follow traffic rules
  • Discouraging drivers from illegally stopping or parking

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
