Historic 'Eastern Avenue' to become 'Old Foundry Road'

A road historically named Eastern Avenue is getting a new name - Old Foundry Road! Following a proposal on my Toronto Centre Projects website, I will be bringing a motion to the upcoming Toronto East York Community Council meeting on May 1, with the goal of having new signage installed by the end of 2025.

The modern Eastern Avenue is an east-west street that runs from just east of Parliament Street to just west of Coxwell Avenue, near the Beaches neighbourhood. However, there is also a smaller road named Eastern Avenue that runs roughly between Sumach Street/Cherry Street and Lawren Harris Square to the south of its better-known cousin.

Before 1964, Eastern Avenue ran straight across the Don River. With the introduction of the new Don Valley Parkway, Eastern Avenue was realigned, creating the “modern” Eastern Avenue that instead curves to the north, merging with both Adelaide Street East and Richmond Street East before travelling across the Don River and curbing back to its original alignment. In modern times, this has left a small portion of the historic Eastern Avenue roughly between Sumach Street/Cherry Street and Lawren Harris Square to share a name with its realigned neighbour.

While not uncommon, renaming this street to Old Foundry Road will clear up that confusion, as well as paying homage to the history of the neighbourhood, specifically to the Dominion Foundry Site which it runs past.

With the respiratory virus season underway, Toronto Public Health is strongly encouraging residents to use all available layers of protection to reduce respiratory virus spread, protect themselves and those who are most vulnerable, such as young children and older adults. Each layer of protection adds up and works best when used together, especially when respiratory virus activity is high.

In 2026 & 2027, revitalizing Downtown Toronto is tied to revitalizing Downtown East – but, troublingly, the City Budget calls for an almost 50% cut to the Downtown East Action Plan.
Together we need to raise the alarm, take action, and stop the cut because the Downtown East Action Plan is the key to transforming and revitalizing Downtown Toronto – both physically and economically.
