Pets in the City

Who's Responsible for What?

In Toronto, all dogs and cats must be licensed with the city, which provides a tag for identification. A license helps return lost pets to their owners quickly and is required by law. The cost of licensing a spayed/neutered dog is $25, while an unspayed/unneutered dog costs $60. Pet owners aged 65 or older receive a 50% discount, and those with low household income may qualify for subsidized or waived fees. Pet licensing must be renewed annually.

The City of Toronto has partnered with DocuPet to make pet licensing and renewals faster and easier for pet owners.

Microchipping

Microchipping is also encouraged as a permanent form of identification, offering additional protection for pets. The city offers low-cost microchipping services through initiatives like the Chip Truck. Visit the City of Toronto's website for more details on microchipping.

Chip Truck

Toronto Animal Services’ mobile Chip Truck offers low-cost microchipping and rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs in various neighbourhoods across Toronto. To find a Chip Truck event near you, please visit the City of Toronto website.

Only a veterinarian licensed in Ontario is authorized to administer the rabies vaccine to your pet. The rabies vaccine, which contains a killed virus, is effective for one year and is given subcutaneously (under the skin) on the right hind leg. If your pet has received a rabies vaccination within the past year, please inform the staff. The veterinarian will assess whether your pet is eligible for revaccination based on their previous vaccination history.

Some possible side effects of the rabies vaccine include hives, facial swelling, vomiting and difficulty breathing.
