Statement on U.S. Tariffs

There has been 24/7 news discussion about the United States’s threats to impose widespread tariffs on Canadian goods, as well as retaliatory measures across the nation in response.

This has included a response by Mayor Chow to ask for a review of procurement policies to prioritize Canadian goods and services, and a request by City Council for the creation of a City of Toronto “Buy Local, Buy Canadian” Campaign. These are measures I strongly support, especially while there remains significant uncertainty about our country’s relationship with our southern neighbour.

As the City’s small business advocate and as a small business owner myself, I am deeply concerned about how a potential trade war will impact Toronto. City councillors have collectively heard a broad and patriotic desire to find ways to ensure our economy becomes more resilient against the mood swings of President Trump.

My office is working on a window decal for Toronto-Centre businesses to support these efforts. My team will be visiting businesses in the coming weeks to help distribute these decals, so please look out for us. We’re all in this together.
