Over the weekend, a demonstration in support of Palestine made its way through Regent Park. At Parliament Street and Gerrard Street East, the demonstration was interrupted when Toronto Police attempted to seize a truck that was in motion with people on its bed, in violation of the Highway Traffic Act. Toronto Police allege that at this time, a few protestors then became violent towards the officers.

While I cannot condone any illegal activity or violent behaviour, I do support the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, as well as the calls from the United Nations Security Council and the Federal government for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages.

I found the videos of the events that transpired on Saturday upsetting, with reports of multiple people sustaining injuries - including a bystander unaffiliated with the protest. I have also heard from members of the Regent Park community about how this event has left many people feeling intimidated and unsettled.

Following the demonstration this weekend, I have been in communication with the Acting Superintendent of 51 Division at Toronto Police Services to gather more information about what took place to ensure that it is not repeated in the future. I was assured that officers issued multiple warnings regarding the individuals on the pickup truck before seizing the vehicle.

As protests continue in our community, I advocate for using de-escalation tactics as the primary response mechanism to ensure the safety of everyone involved. I also believe it is important to acknowledge the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement in managing large-scale events. By fostering understanding and cooperation between all parties, we can ensure the continuation of peaceful demonstrations.

Sincerely,

Chris Moise
