Waste Reduction Week is October 20 to 26

Waste management in a city the size of Toronto is a complex task. In 2023, the City managed close to 830,000 tonnes of waste (close to two billion pounds). Let’s make Toronto greener by minimizing waste and keeping items out of landfill. Do your part by refusing single-use and takeaway items, repairing and repurposing items you would otherwise throw away and borrowing or sharing less frequently used items, such as tools, party supplies, camping gear and sports equipment.

How can I participate in Waste Reduction Week?

Attend a Community Reduce & Reuse Program! Join events and workshops offered in person and online throughout the year that help foster a culture of waste reduction, sharing, repairing and reuse in Toronto. Check out the schedule for Urban Harvest, Sewing Repair Hub, Bicycle Repair Hub, Community Composting and Sharing and Reuse Space programs on the City’s Community Reduce & Reuse Program Schedule webpage.

Learn more ways to reduce your waste on the City’s Waste Reduction web page.

More than 130 residents participated in community safety meetings hosted by my office and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) this spring in St. James Town and Moss Park. The meetings brought together residents, TCHC staff, Toronto Police Service, the City's Violence Intervention and Support Unit, Fred Victor, and Unison Health and Community Services to discuss local safety concerns and identify solutions.
