Cable Installation: Queen Street East and Sumach Street

This road closure has already taken place.

Starting Saturday, April 11, TTC crews will be conducting local excavation on Queen Street East to expose areas for new cable installation. Track areas to enable Overhead Engineering to replace negative cables as part of its preventative maintenance program, ensuring safe and reliable streetcar service. 501/301 Queen streetcars are scheduled to return to regular routing on May 3, 2026.

Works hours and timeline

  • TTC crews will set up the work zone and begin working on Saturday, Aprill 11.
  • Around-the-clock work is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete.
  • Work will consist of concrete milling, followed by concrete saw-cutting, concrete breaking/removal, new cable installation, replacement of streetcar rail, and placement of new concrete.

Motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian impacts

  • The majority of this work will take place within the streetcar allowance (centre lane) on Queen Street East.
  • Traffic will be maintained in the curb lanes in both directions through the work zone.
  • Cyclists and vehicle traffic will be required to share the travel lanes through the work zone.
  • The location of the work zone may inhibit some left turns for vehicles.
  • These road restrictions will be cleared once all work is completed.
  • Pedestrian access maintained.

TTC Service Changes – Buses will continue to operate through the work areas.
