The Refugee Rights March: Stand Up for Justice and Equality!

The 519 and partners invite the community, allies, partner organizations and refugees to partake in the Refugee Rights March. Together, we will raise our voices to support for LGBTQ+ refugees.

This march commemorates the historic Singh decision of 1985, which affirmed the fundamental rights of refugee claimants in Canada.  LGBTQ+ refugees are disproportionately affected by discriminatory legislation worldwide, making it critical that we highlight both progress and ongoing challenges.

This Refugee Rights March is being organized by The 519 in collaboration with partner organizations. By participating, you'll join a collective effort to advocate for tangible solutions and ensure that refugees receive the support and protection they deserve.

What: Refugee Rights March
When: May 16, 11:30am to 1:30pm
Where: Barbara Hall Park (519 Church Street)

As we approach May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBT), we join the queer momentum as part of the National Rainbow Week of Action (May 11 to 17) observed across the nation. Together with our allies, we call on governments to defend the rights and safety of 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians, including refugees and newcomers.

While optional, attendees are being asked to register by visiting Eventbrite. Partner organizations supporting this cause include Pride Toronto, OCASI, Sojourn House Toronto, FCJ Refugee Centre, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, Toronto Metropolitan University, Margaret’s Housing and Community Support Services and Rainbow Railroad.

It has been a tremendously busy summer! Between Pride and FIFA on one end, the final Toronto and East York Community Council and City Council of the term later this month on the other, and the ongoing Church Street Pedestrianization Pilot, my team and I have been working hard to continue delivering results. Despite the stress, despite the heat, and especially despite the province’s ongoing work to make the City of Toronto miserable, for this final proper Councillor Update of the term, I want to provide positive vibes only.

The celebration on Church Street continues! The Church Street Pedestrianization has officially launched, with the Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and my team installed patios and more seating on Church Street post-Pride to make it an even better place to visit. The pedestrianization lasts until August 21, so come on out and experience The Village like never before, enjoy the beautiful weather, and help me advocate for more pedestrianization across the City and to make this pilot permanent!
